Six Affordable Holiday Gift Ideas

Here’s a compilation of wonderful gift ideas that are all gifts either I have given or that my friends have given me or their other loved ones. I hope you’ll be able to use them this holiday season:

1. Give a loved one a year planner but make sure you mark all your personal anniversaries, special moments in there; e.g. Feb 28: “This was that day a year ago we walked in the park and saw that giant owl. It was so close we could have touched it if we reached out our hands.” Or, May 18: “Around this time 4 years ago we visited your parents at their beach house. Remember when we sneaked out after dinner to be alone on the beach?”

2. Take an old treasured photo from your loved-one’s past and frame it. Or a certificate or award would work, too!

3. Collect your or your loved one’s family/favourite recipes and compile them on a disk or in a notebook. You can even book a cooking or baking night with him or her afterward.

4. Do you have a special talent? Can you use it to make a gift? E.g. If you are a cartoonist, have you made a caricature of your friend yet? Or if you are a musician, have you written a song for your sweetie yet?

5. Get a DVD of your loved-one’s favourite film as a kid.

6. Do you make the best homemade salsa around town? Do you have a special secret mix of herbs and spices you use for your dishes that everyone loves? Make some giant batches, bottle them and give them out as gifts!

Great Affordable Gift: Personal Christmas Tree Ornaments

These personalized Christmas Tree ornaments make not only thoughtful and cute stocking stuffers for parents, grandparents and relatives, but also make for a great conversation piece for anyone who sees them.

Total cost for the finished product as shown in the video can be as low as $2-3 CDN per ornament.

Note that MLC projects use a lot of the same materials over and over. For example, if you end up buying gesso and only use a small portion of it with this demo, you’ll probably see a demo in the near future where the gesso is also used. This avoids waste and unnecessary expenses. Or, why not ask your friends to chip in for the cost of materials and have a gift-making party and use up all the supplies in one shot?

What To Give Or Not To Give, Those Are The Questions

Some of you may have their gift and shopping list prepped already, and you may have a minimum and maximum amount of cash you want to spend per gift and an idea of what to get the people on your list; I know I do.  But I do have a friend that I  always have a hard time shopping for.

I have known my friend (let’s call her Annie) for many years.  Annie has become one of my best friends and we have always exchanged Christmas gifts.  Everything was fine in the gift-giving department until the year I started my own business and had to slash my gift budget dramatically.  I still gave Annie a very thoughtful gift that year (as I still do to this day) but I noticed that when she tore the wrapping from it, she was not happy.

Up until that time, Annie had always given all her friends the same or similar gifts each year.   But after that one gift incident, I have noticed that the quality of her gifts to me has gone down.  The first year I noticed that she gave all her friends a necklace except for me, I got a bracelet.  The year after that, I again got an inferior gift compared to our other friends.  And each year thereafter, it’s been worse and worse.  One time I got a bag of candy from a grocery store.

I believe she does this because I cannot afford to budget as much on her gifts (and everyone else’s) as I used to and she feels that she shouldn’t have to shell out as much cash for my gifts either.  I never thought to compare budgets with friends before this but maybe in her case I should?  I have always based gift-giving to friends on my budget, not theirs, and what each individual would appreciate.  I feel insulted and hurt by Annie’s actions, maybe I should stop giving her gifts altogether?  Because why bother to give a gift to a friend if it is not sincere and heartfelt?

So dear readers, what are your gift-giving rules?  Do you only give a gift if you expect one back?  Do you budget according to what the other person’s budget is?  Do you have a similar budget for all your friends?  I’d really like to know!

Recycled Gift Wrapping

Starting to buy your holiday presents and paraphernalia?  If you’re like me, you are.  The holidays can be very expensive and if your wallet could feel pain, this will be the time of year it would.  But the holidays can not only tax your wallet, but Mother Earth as well.  Tons of wrapping paper and gift bags are bought and then thrown away each year.

So, this year, let’s save some energy and cash by using the comic strip/funnies section of your newspapers instead of store bought gift wrap.  Or if you subscribe to magazines, start tearing out and saving some of the pages now.  The Earth will love you for it, and your gift recipients will appreciate your unique wrapping.

Happy wrapping!  :-)

Shop at Local Craft Fairs for Gifts

Tis the season, the Christmas craft fair season! I visit and buy many of my gifts at local craft fairs and farmers markets because I like to support small businesses and my fellow Canadians in their money endeavors.

Another benefit I see to buying at craft fairs are that most likely, the item bought will be handmade and therefore not likely mass produced so the recipient the gift won’t be wearing the same shawl, shirt or bracelet as his/her neighbours. And buying local helps reduce our stamp on the environment (less fuel used to transport goods), too.

It is true that farmer’s markets and craft fairs are not always the cheapest places to buy gifts and other items but at least you know where the goods come from (most likely the vendor if also the maker of the item and no sweatshops) and you are helping the economy so in the long run, you may just be helping yourself, too.

If you live in the Vancouver area, here are the upcoming crafts fairs that you can visit for this season be sure to check out:

1. Bonsor Community Centre’s Christmas Fair -
November 21 & 22, Saturday and Sunday, 10AM-3PM
6550 Bonsor Ave., Burnaby, BC

2. Blim Craft Fair -
Sunday, November 29, 11AM-5PM
215 E 17th Ave., Vancouver, BC

Early Holiday Shopping Equals A Little Less Holiday Stress

Yes, I know, Halloween has just passed and already I am writing about Holiday shopping. But for good reason! My family celebrates Christmas and we have dinners, get-togethers, gift-exchange, etc. And since I tend to be a little obsessive about giving gifts people will cherish (or at least like), I have to start early (at least by early November) to avoid undue stress.

This is the time I tend to do a lot of window shopping. Whether I am looking to order online, buy something at the mall ready-made and off the rack, or planning to make a gift by hand, I take some time to browse at lunch time or after work and get some gift ideas (and prices). It is also handy to have your gift list ready and with you at this time.

After a week or so I have an idea of what handmade gifts I am making so I buy the materials and I start creating them. As I create, I wrap and tag them so that I don’t forget what goes to whom. If I decide that I am making something edible, I carefully calculate and then buy as many of the ingredients as early as I can to avoid mad rushes at the food stores closer to the holidays. A day or two before our celebration, I can bake/cook without too much worry that an ingredient is missing.

Same goes for ready-made gifts. I tend to buy early for fear of not getting the right size or colour of toy, garment, gizmo, etc. or worse, not being able to get the thing at all for the “hot” items. And for the online orders, now is the time to buy them to make sure the gift arrives on time. You really don’t want to pay more for a last-minute gift!

Happy shopping, everyone. And for those looking for some gift ideas, I’ll be posting some articles on those in the coming weeks.

Gifts: Asking For What You Want

When my birthday or Christmas is nearing, I make a list of all the stuff I want to get as gifts.  Am I being presumptuous?  No, practical.  Every year I tell my boyfriend what I want because every year at least one or two of my friends will call him and ask him what they should get me.  This way, I am saving them the stress of not knowing what gift to give.

I hate getting gifts I can’t use or won’t use because it’s so not my thing.  I hate it because I’ll have to store it (it’ll immediately go into storage until the Salvation Army and I don’t have much storage space) and because someone just wasted their hard-earned money on an item that won’t be used or loved by the person they intended.  Seriously, I feel almost physical pain when someone wastes cash this way or in any way.

By the way, I do the same thing, I ask people what they want coz sometimes I just don’t get it right. Plus it gives me pleasure knowing I helped a loved-one make their desires come true.

Mother’s Day Gift Suggestions (One with an Ulterior Investment Motive)

Mother’s Day is coming up!  If you have a mom you’d like to thank this special day, why not make her something?  Cook her a nice lunch (I have posted a great recipe for Baked Tofu and Rice today) or make a card.  Yes, MAKE a card.  Even if you think you have no artistic abilities.  I  am a mom of a 17 year-old and I still prefer the stuff he makes me.  His hand-made cards, crafted simply with colored paper and coloured inks, although not the kind you’d find at Hallmark stores, are my favourite presents.  Or if you think a card is not enough for your special mom, try one of the gift ideas in our Affordable Gifts section of this blog.

I love giving and receiving very personalized or hand-made gifts.  To me, it shows that the giver really took the time to think of the recipients and took the time and energy to create something for them.  Also, the gift is likely one of a kind or at least a limited edition.  And another plus is that it’s usually very economical to make something rather than buying an item from the store.

There are two moms I am going to give gifts to this year: my mom and my boyfriend’s mom, Mary.  I made Mary a personalized journal (a store-bought journal on which I pasted an acrylic transfer of a painting of me and boyfriend).   My mom likes jewelry, so I am making her a beaded necklace.

I am going to enjoy making my mom’s gift very much because I will be taking a class in order to create her necklace.  Since I believe in lifelong learning and trying out new things, I consider this class to be an investment.  I will be learning a new skill and have a reason (my mom’s gift) to practice this skill after the class is over.

If you have any other ideas for Mother’s Day or Affordable Gifts, I’d love to hear from you.  Or if you want more info on what I think are Alternative Investments, go to Alternative Investments section of this blog.

Great Affordable Gift: Personalized Journal

This personalized journal makes a great gift for a loved one who loves to sketch, write or make lists. Why not decorate a plain notebook or journal with a picture of your loved one when he was a kid or use one of your friend’s doodles that she made when she was six?

Total cost for the finished product as shown in the video can be as low as $15 CDN (without the gesso and paint, as low as $9).

Note that MLC projects use a lot of the same materials over and over. For example, if you end up buying gesso and only use a small portion of it with this demo, you’ll probably see a demo in the near future where the gesso is also used.
